How to use fireplace?

The Smidson Vigo is a lightweight decorative fireplace meant to create atmosphere in our holiday home. Even if the temperature drops to –35 °C, this fireplace is not intended to heat the holiday home. Our holiday home has electric underfloor heating that provides comfortable living temperature.

Preparations Before Lighting the Fire

  • Open the chimney damper: Make sure the flue is open and the draft works. You can test it by burning a small piece of paper – the smoke should rise into the chimney.

  • Ensure air supply: It is recommended to turn off the range hood during lighting. You may open the kitchen window slightly for a moment.

Wood and Kindling

  • Stack a few pieces of split firewood crosswise in the firebox.

  • For lighting, place birch bark, fire starters, or small sticks on top of the wood.

Lighting

  • Top-down lighting: Light the wood from the top of the pile. The fire will burn from top to bottom, resulting in lower emissions and more efficient heat use.

  • Air adjustment: Keep the combustion air control fully open during lighting. You may keep the fireplace door slightly ajar until the fire is burning well.

Adding More Wood

  • Add larger logs one at a time only when there is a proper bed of embers.

  • Open the air control fully for a moment as the new wood catches fire, then adjust it back to a calm burn.

Firewood can be found at xxx.

Warnings:

• Do not fill the firebox completely with logs — the fireplace may overheat. It is not intended for heating.
• Do not burn trash in the fireplace.
• Ensure there are no glowing embers or flames before closing the chimney damper. Closing it too soon can cause a carbon monoxide hazard.
• When lighting the fireplace, we recommend not using the range hood. If necessary, during the ignition phase you may open the kitchen window slightly so the fireplace receives enough air.
